US: DADT Policy addressed in Detective Comics Feat. Batwoman

The lead feature continues the part-flashback, part-present-day structure of the previous issue, as we learn more about Kate Kane's younger days. This time it begins at West Point, when Cadet Katherine "Candy" Kane faces a moral dilemma that forces her out of the academy. Actually, it's not much of a dilemma for her -- the choice is clear: honesty. And revealing her homosexuality means that she can no longer follow in the footsteps of her father.

This issue focuses on Kate's transition from military cadet to spoiled socialite. Beginning with her discharge from the military due to her inability to lie about her sexual orientation, Rucka provides readers with some much-needed insight into the character of Kate Kane. It was particularly interesting to explore the first encounter between Kate and Renee Montoya as well, hopefully the brief glimpse we're provided with here isn't meant to represent the full extent of their relationship. Rucka does a fantastic job really breaking Kate's character down and by the end of the issue there's no question as to why she chose to take on the mantel of the bat. While previous story arcs featuring Batwoman have provided more questions than answers it's evident that Rucka has set out to answer many of those questions here.
